Questions

Who is behind it?

Play With ASL, with CLERC: a Deaf-led company building sign language datasets so AI can understand ASL. Your videos help train models that recognize signing.

What do I record?

Short English sentences, one at a time. You sign each one in ASL, 3 to 7 seconds per video, the way you naturally would.

How should I sign?

Your natural ASL: your own signs, pace and facial expressions, the meaning rather than word for word. Head to waist in frame with hands and elbows always visible, a plain background with nobody else in view, light on your face (never a window behind you), a plain top, and hands resting at the start and end of each video.

What do I need?

A computer with a webcam, Chrome or Safari, good light on your face and hands, and a plain background. Sit back so your hands and elbows stay in frame.

How much do I earn?

US$0.10 per accepted video, in US dollars. 100 videos = US$10, 1,000 videos = US$100. Your balance updates live while you sign.

When and how am I paid?

You choose: every 100 accepted videos (US$10) or every 1,000 (US$100). You can change it anytime from the menu in your studio. Each payout is created automatically and sent within 7 days. In the US: ACH to your bank account, or Revolut. In Canada: a bank transfer in Canadian dollars, the US$ amount converted at the rate of the payout day. Elsewhere: Revolut, or an international bank transfer in US$. CLERC pays the transfer fees.

Is there a limit?

1,000 new videos per month. Redoing a video you already recorded does not count. The counter resets on the 1st. If this month's budget fills up early, new videos open again on the 1st. Want to record more? Email florianmeloux@orange.fr.

Is there a minimum?

No. Record as much as you like, up to 1,000 new videos a month. Stop anytime.

Can I volunteer instead?

Yes. Pick Volunteer when you join: same levels and credits, no payment, no bank details.

Who sees my videos?

Only CLERC. Your face is never published. Only face-anonymized data leaves CLERC: pose keypoints, avatars with a replaced face, and text annotations. Raw videos stay encrypted and are deleted at most 24 months after delivery. You can withdraw your consent anytime: write to florian@clerc.io.

What if I make a mistake?

Press R to redo before confirming, or B to take a break. Any video can be redone later from the list. A video can be refused if it does not match the sentence or is unusable; just record it again.

Can I stop?

Anytime, without notice. What you recorded stays paid.

Is my bank information safe?

It is encrypted and used only to send your payouts. On screen you only ever see the last 4 digits.

Taxes?

You record as an independent contractor and report this income yourself. CLERC is based outside the US and Canada and does not issue a Form 1099 or a T4A.
